The problem

A cigarette butt looks harmless in the sand. It isn't. It's a bundle of plastic and concentrated toxins left exactly where the sea, wildlife and children play.

They leach poison

Filters trap arsenic, lead, nicotine and over 7,000 chemicals. One soaked butt can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of seawater — deadly to fish larvae and plankton at the base of the Adriatic food chain.

They're plastic, not paper

Filters are made of cellulose acetate — a plastic. They don't biodegrade; they crumble into microplastics that end up in mussels, fish, and eventually on our plates.

They hurt our coast's future

Montenegro's economy lives on its beaches. Littered sand drives visitors away and costs municipalities real money in clean-up — a bill every citizen pays.

Wildlife eats them

Seabirds, turtles and fish mistake butts for food. Ingested filters block digestion and slowly release toxins into the animals that call our coast home.
